In teaching dance for as long as I have, I have come to know that the favorite in any dance
studio is Tap Dancing. I am a ballet teacher and a ballet class “pusher” because, if you can
understand ballet, the grace, form and technique, you will adapt to any form of dance .....
ANY FORM ..... And your efforts in other dance forms will be clean, graceful and technically
correct. But I am also a Tap Dance teacher.... And I have seen throughout my years, that Tap
Dancing becomes the class of choice for most dance students for many reasons. One is that it
is a fun and enjoyable art form.
To begin, the music is happy, most times quick and exciting. Any form of music can be used.
Swing, (my favorite choice) Pop, Rap, Broadway, Rag Time, you name it we can Tap Dance to it. When you Tap Dance you become both a musician and a dancer, using and creating your
sense of rhythm and improving your feeling for finding the beat and pattern in music. You
become one of the instruments. Keeping that beat just feels good. Tapping is a release that is actually great for improving emotional health and self-confidence.
Tap Dance gives us an outlet for expression.
Once you learn the basics, Tap Dancing is great exercise! Tap choreography is an aerobic activity. It is a fun way to tone your legs. too! But not only the physical aspects of Tap Dancing is good for your body, but Tap is also good for your mind. Tap steps are complex. Learning them, practicing them and putting them together is good exercise for your brain. It has been said the brain exercise helps to prevent Alzheimers disease and dementia.
So in the long run, if you Tap Dance, continue...if you don’t .....try a class, you will love it!
